Playroom Design - Reading Area

No matter how technologically advanced we become, everyone still needs to know how to read and thus the importance of a Reading Area. The key characteristics of this area are the following:
- This is a place for children to sit down and read their books (electronic or otherwise) or play on their portable books / computers
- Emphasis is primarily on integrating a commitment to reading early on and reinforcing it on a daily basis. Any other emphasis (e.g. whether a traditional book is better then an electronic book like the Kindle) should not get in the way of this.
- Comfy chairs (or at least some type of comfortable place to sit). Keep in mind that the emphasis is on "be comfortable when you are reading" not particularly on where you are comfortable.
- A place to expose appropriate and "stretch" books / information
- Encourages self-directed as well as group reading (group reading should be encouraged within the home)
- Move unused books into long term storage area and use your re/use/think/cycle strategy
There is a great deal of interesting work which quantifies or at least tries to make sense of the cognitive and the utilitarian importance of reading which simply further supports the need to make this a key part of a learning home.
